Handrails are important for escalator passenger safety, as holding the handrail is one of the best
ways to defend against accidental falls. Yet studies have shown that traditional rubber handrails are
a common surface for bacteria. In December 2003, the New York Daily News featured a story about
surfaces in the NYC transit system and among the surfaces they swabbed were rubber escalator
handrails in which they found significant amounts of bacteria.

cutting boards, bed linens, dish cloths, clothing, paint, caulking, carpet, hot tubs, garden hoses and
computer keyboards.
